Staff Spotlight: Root’s work is deeply personal.
One of our van drivers, Fran Root, was recently featured in the May issue of The Provider’s Council publication, THE PROVIDER. Fran Root was highlighted in the “Saluting the Caring Force” section of the publication – a recurring feature which highlights the work of Direct Support Professionals from agencies all across the Commonwealth. Thank you, Fran, for believing in Riverside’s mission and being such an important part of our organization for so many years. Below is the text from the story about Fran.

When Frances “Fran” Root’s son, Allyn, turned 22 and transitioned out of the public school system he looked to his local elected officials for guidance as he was unsure of his son’s options for the next phase of life. Nancy Flavin, their State Representative at that time, set up a tour of Riverside Industries in Easthampton, and since that first interaction 30 years ago he knew Riverside’s program was the right fit for both Allyn and him.
“I can’t say enough about how important Riverside is to individuals like Allyn who can’t speak up for themselves,” Root said. A few years after Allyn began participating in Riverside’s program, Root was invited to join the organization’s board of directors. It was through this involvement as a volunteer that he gained a better understanding of Riverside’s important role in the community and began to feel a deeper commitment to its mission. Root eventually took a volunteer leadership role in a capital fundraising effort to renovate Riverside’s facility in downtown Easthampton.
Once he retired, Root discovered another opportunity to deepen his connection to Riverside: In 2019, he began working as a part-time van driver. In this role, Root thoughtfully transports program participants just like his son to Riverside. The agency operates a fleet of 30 vans and provides transportation services to adults with disabilities throughout Western Massachusetts.
“Every time I put my foot on the brake, I think about the safety of everyone onboard. I always make sure everyone is secure. I’m a good driver, but that feeling makes me better,” Root said. “I know I am providing the very best care. I won’t be here forever, but I know this agency will be. The folks I am driving are getting the care and education they need.”
